Thoughtful Action: Personality type, The Joy of Flex

How do you combine action and reflection in your day-to-day life?

You have taken action by clicking on this post and hopefully, before you move on to something new, you will think about what you are reading. Perhaps you will appreciate this information, incorporate it into what you already know, and apply it. Or maybe you’ll dismiss it.

Of course, I think appreciating, incorporating, and applying are your best choices. Just saying…

Identify your Strengths and Challenges

Take a few seconds to reflect on how you tend to balance action and reflection. Are you more likely to say or do something and wish you hadn’t, or do you find yourself wishing you had acted or spoken?

Your tendency to act quickly, or with more caution, is linked to your natural approach as well as to the situation, your life experiences, learning, and confidence.

Find the Flex

Think about how you can use both action and reflection to be effective at home, at work, or with friends.

Perhaps you can act by sharing an example or story in the comments section below about how you have learned to effectively flex between action and reflection in your life.

    This is interesting. I find that if I am verbally assaulted with rudeness (thankfully this is rare) I am simply unable to respond, and will just stare, wide-eyed, wondering why that person would say such a thing. I wish I could change that, and not go into a “shocked” state. However, in every other situation I have a ready response – sometimes in fact I feel unable to stop the words from rolling off my tongue, especially if I feel compelled to verbally illustrate a principle. I type as ENFP. My husband, on the other hand, is an INTJ, and always, always has a quick sarcastic witty reply to rudeness, which will generally make the other person laugh… but otherwise his words tend to be very intentional and measured. What do you make of that? Are those typical “type” responses…?

    Hi Charity, Interesting observation. We use some of our preference in the outer world and some in the inner world. I wonder if perhaps the orientation of your preferences might be operating in your example. Generally an ENFP will extravert ideas and possibilities (Ne) while keeping their values and evaluation process more private (Fi). An INTJ reverses this, dealing with the outer world with his evaluative process of Thinking (Te) and internally integrating ideas (Ni). In a situation that is offensive, sounds like you move into your internal world to try to understand what is happening while he responds decisively in the outer world. Thanks for sharing this example. It shows us how personality type preferences are a complex pattern rather than simply four preferences.
