Spotlight on ISTP

Spotlight on ISTP

Motto: “Get to the point.”

When creating type resources, one of my goals is to offer practical descriptions and examples to help people understand each of the different patterns of personality type preferences.

One way I have done this is by creating mottos for each four-letter combination. Each motto is based on type research, my reading, and my experiences. The intention is to create a motto that reflects the dominant function.

I chose “Get to the point.” for ISTP preferences to describe their logical, task-oriented approach.

People who prefer ISTP generally like to be efficient and often prefer working independently. They try to avoid small talk and would rather not spend much time attending to social conventions and social niceties.

Some people may misinterpret this independent nature as rude, when it is simply, for people who prefer ISTP, the logical thing to do.

Do you have an ISTP in your life? Do they demonstrate a logical, independent nature? How do you interpret their actions?

For more information on these preferences, go to the ISTP tag.

I am an ENFP and have very few close relationships with ISTP’s.. but the interpretation (from this NF) in response to “get to the point” is impatience and disregard because there is an assumption by an ISTP that relevance is limited to “sensing.” NF’s live in a world that’s predominantly concrete in perception.. so we acclimate.. but in communication SP’s and SJ’s are missing out when they filter out the thought processes that Intuitives have to go through in order to explain the relevance of conclusions that are not always tangible. So conclusions are either invalid due to the lack of sensibility without understanding the mindset or are dismissed because they are taking too long to make the connections to the abstract.

    Don’t flatter yourself, Julia.

Being an ISTP, I can say you are spot on: I don’t like fluff talk i.e. “get to the point”, don’t like spending time on social niceties, sometimes perceived as rude, love working independently!
